Address wrong on your V5C log book
An out-of-date address on your log book means refund cheques, reminders and fine letters go to the wrong place. Fix it first, then SORN.
Why it matters for SORN
- Refunds are sent to the name and address on the V5C (GOV.UK).
- Tax reminders go there too. Miss them and you can end up with an £80 penalty.
- It's a legal requirement to keep the log book up to date, and you can be fined up to £1,000 for not telling DVLA about a change of address.
Option 1: Change your address online, then SORN
GOV.UK's Make a SORN page says: change your address online, then register your vehicle as off the road. The change of address service is free and a new V5C is posted to your new address. Once it's updated, SORN online.
Option 2: Do both by post
- Write your new address in the log book:
- section 3 on the new-style log book (multi-coloured numbered blocks on the front cover)
- section 6 on the older-style log book
- Fill in form V890 (SORN application).
- Send the log book and V890 together to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AR.
Moved and lost the log book?
Send form V62 (log book application, £25) and V890 together. See lost V5C.
Already SORN'd with the old address?
The SORN is still valid. It's about the vehicle, not the address. But update your address now so any refund or letter reaches you. If a refund has gone to the old address, see refund not received.
Driving licence too
Your driving licence address is separate from the log book. Changing one doesn't update the other. You can update your licence address free on GOV.UK.
