Frequently asked questions

Is SORN free?

Yes. Making a SORN with DVLA is free online at GOV.UK, by phone on 0300 123 4321 or by post with form V890. You never need to pay a third party.

Do I need to renew my SORN?

No. Since 2013 a SORN has no expiry. It lasts until the vehicle is taxed, sold, scrapped or permanently exported.

Can I backdate a SORN?

No. A SORN starts when you apply, or on the 1st of next month if you apply in the month your tax expires.

Will I get a refund when I SORN?

Yes, for any full calendar months of vehicle tax remaining. It is sent automatically to the name and address on the V5C.

How long does a refund take?

DVLA quotes about 6 weeks. Contact DVLA if it has not arrived after 8 weeks.

Do I need insurance on a SORN vehicle?

No. A SORN vehicle kept off the road is excluded from continuous insurance enforcement. Many owners keep laid-up (fire and theft) cover.

Can I drive a SORN car?

Only on a public road to or from a pre-booked MOT or other test appointment, and it must be insured. Otherwise you risk a fine of up to £2,500.

Can I park a SORN car on the street?

No. It must be kept off public roads: in a garage, on a private drive or on private land.

Does a SORN car need an MOT?

Not while it is off the road. You will need a valid MOT (unless exempt) before you can tax it again.

How do I take a car off SORN?

Tax it. Taxing cancels the SORN automatically. Get an MOT (if needed) and insurance first.

Does SORN transfer to the new owner?

No. A buyer must tax the vehicle or make their own SORN.

Do I need to SORN a car I have sold?

No. Tell DVLA you have sold it instead.

What is the fine for not having a SORN?

An automatic £80 late licensing penalty, reduced to £40 if paid within 33 days, plus any tax owed.

What is the fine for an uninsured car without a SORN?

£100, with possible clamping or impounding and court fines of up to £1,000.

Which reference number do I need?

The 11-digit document reference from your V5C log book, or the 16-digit reference from a vehicle tax reminder.

Can I SORN without my log book?

Yes. Use a tax reminder reference, or send forms V62 and V890 to DVLA (a new log book costs £25).

Can I SORN a car that is not in my name?

Not online. Fill in the appropriate part of the log book and send it with form V890.

How do I check if a car is SORN?

Use GOV.UK's free Check if a vehicle is taxed service with the registration number.

Can I SORN a car I am taking abroad?

No. A SORN is only valid while the vehicle stays in the UK.

Do classic cars need a SORN?

Historic vehicles still need to be taxed (free if built before 1 January 1986 from 1 April 2026) or declared SORN.

Is SORN.co.uk part of DVLA?

No. SORN.co.uk is an independent information site and is not affiliated with DVLA or the government.
