Lost your V5C log book? SORN and replace it

A lost log book doesn't stop you taking a vehicle off the road, but don't let it delay you. Here's the order to do things.

Checked against GOV.UK guidance · Updated 25 October 2026

First: protect yourself from a fine

If the vehicle's tax is running out or has run out, sort the SORN before worrying about the log book.

Replacing the log book

Online or by phone (fastest)

If the vehicle is already registered to you at your current address, apply for a replacement V5C on GOV.UK. It costs £25. GOV.UK says it usually arrives by post within 5 to 7 working days. Contact DVLA if it hasn't arrived after 2 weeks.

By post

Fill in form V62 and send it with a cheque or postal order for £25 payable to "DVLA, Swansea" to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1DD. Postal applications usually take about 4 weeks.

At a Post Office

GOV.UK says some Post Office branches that deal with vehicle tax accept a completed V62 with the £25 fee. Check your branch first.

When the new log book arrives

Log book stolen?

If you suspect theft (for example, the log book was taken with keys or in a burglary), report it to the police and tell DVLA. A stolen V5C can be used to sell a vehicle fraudulently.

Bought a car without a log book?

That's a different situation, and a warning sign. See bought a car with SORN and check the vehicle's history before you go any further. A full MOT history check shows previous tests and mileage.
