SORN not showing on the DVLA record

You've made a SORN, but the DVLA vehicle check still says "Untaxed". Don't panic. Work through these causes in order.

Checked against GOV.UK guidance · Updated 25 October 2026

1. It's still being processed

DVLA's published processing times are:

How you appliedAllow
OnlineUsually shows quickly
By telephoneUp to 4 weeks for SORN confirmation
By post6 to 8 weeks

Source: Contact DVLA: vehicle tax and SORN.

2. It hasn't started yet

If you applied in the month your tax expires, the SORN starts on the 1st of next month. Until then the vehicle shows as taxed. See when does SORN start?

3. It was cancelled

A SORN is cancelled automatically when the vehicle is taxed, sold, scrapped or exported. If someone (a family member, a garage, a new keeper) taxed the vehicle, the SORN ends.

4. Wrong registration or reference

A typo, a confused 0 and O or 1 and I, or an old log book reference can mean the SORN went nowhere. Check your confirmation email or screenshot against the number plate. Check the reference with our reference number guide.

5. Postal application went astray

If you posted a V890 and nothing has changed after 8 weeks, contact DVLA with your proof of postage.

What to do now

  1. Check the status again on GOV.UK.
  2. Find your evidence: confirmation screen, email, call time, proof of postage.
  3. If it's been longer than the times above, make the SORN again online if you can. It costs nothing, and it's the fastest way to make sure the vehicle is covered from today.
  4. Call DVLA Vehicle Enquiries on 0300 790 6802 to query the original.
  5. If you've had an £80 penalty letter for the gap, see DVLA fine letters.
