SORN for campervans and motorhomes

Motorhomes and campervans often spend half the year in storage. If yours is off the road for the winter, a SORN can cut costs.

Checked against GOV.UK guidance · Updated 25 October 2026

Can I SORN a motorhome?

Yes. A registered motorhome or campervan follows the same rules as a car: it must be taxed or declared SORN. Make a SORN online, by phone or by post.

Storage sites count as off the road

A secure storage compound, farm or private yard is private land. A SORN vehicle can be kept there. A motorhome parked on the street outside your house can't be SORN.

Insurance in storage

Motorhomes are valuable and a target for theft. Most owners keep laid-up or storage cover rather than cancelling outright. Some storage sites insist on it. Check the policy covers the storage address (SORN and insurance).

Spring: back on the road

Check the MOT and book one if expired, driving only to the pre-booked test; insure it; then tax it, which cancels the SORN.

  1. Is the MOT valid?if not, book one and drive only to the pre-booked test
  2. Insure itfrom the first day of use
  3. Tax itV5C, V11 reminder or green new keeper slip
  4. SORN ends automatically
Getting a SORN vehicle back on the road
  1. Recommission: water system, gas, habitation checks and a good look at the tyres (motorhome tyres often age out before they wear out).
  2. Check the MOT. Plan ahead, as not every test centre can take large vans. See the history with a full MOT history check.
  3. Insure for road use, then tax it.

Driving to the MOT

As with any SORN vehicle, you can only drive it to and from a pre-booked MOT, insured.
