MOT and SORN: the rules

A SORN vehicle doesn't need a valid MOT while it's off the road. But you'll need one to tax it again, and getting it to the test station has rules of its own.

Checked against GOV.UK guidance · Updated 25 October 2026

Does a SORN car need an MOT?

No. While a vehicle is declared SORN and kept off the road, it doesn't need a current MOT certificate. The MOT only matters again when you want to tax it and use it. GOV.UK says you can't renew vehicle tax if your MOT has expired.

Can I drive a SORN car to an MOT?

Yes, but only in one situation. GOV.UK says you can drive a vehicle with a SORN on a public road only to go to or from a pre-booked MOT or other testing appointment. That means:

  1. The MOT must be booked before you set off. Keep the booking confirmation with you.
  2. The vehicle must be insured for the journey. A SORN doesn't make driving without insurance legal.
  3. Drive directly to and from the test centre. No detours, errands or "while I'm out" trips.
  4. The vehicle should be roadworthy. GOV.UK warns you can be fined up to £2,500, banned and get 3 points for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

What if it fails the MOT?

If the car fails, it must not be driven at all if any defect is graded "dangerous". Otherwise, check carefully before using the road again. The SORN still applies, so ask the test centre to do repairs on site where you can, or arrange a trailer or recovery truck to a garage. Get your insurer's view if you're unsure. Check what the failure means with a full MOT history check. Every failure, advisory and mileage reading is listed.

Insurance for the MOT trip

Options include adding the car to your normal policy from the test day, a short-term (temporary) policy, or a laid-up policy that allows MOT journeys (check the wording). See SORN and car insurance.

MOT on a classic car

Vehicles built or first registered more than 40 years ago may be exempt from MOT if no substantial changes have been made (GOV.UK historic vehicles). More in classic cars and SORN.
