Scrapping a car that's on SORN
A SORN car can be scrapped like any other. Use the right kind of scrapyard and the DVLA side is handled for you.
Use an authorised treatment facility (ATF)
In the UK you must scrap a vehicle at an authorised treatment facility (ATF), sometimes called a vehicle dismantler or breaker. GOV.UK says scrapping at an ATF is usually free, and you may be paid for the vehicle (Scrapping your vehicle).
What to give the ATF
- the V5C log book
- but keep the yellow "sell, transfer or part-exchange your vehicle to the motor trade" section. You need it to tell DVLA
Certificate of destruction
For cars, light vans and some 3-wheelers, the ATF gives you a certificate of destruction within 7 days. That's your proof that the vehicle has been destroyed and that you're no longer responsible for it. Keep it safe.
Telling DVLA
GOV.UK says you must tell DVLA you've taken your vehicle to an ATF, using the details from the yellow section. You can be fined £1,000 if you don't. Once DVLA knows, your SORN ends, any tax is cancelled and refunded, and you're no longer the keeper.
Do I need to SORN before scrapping?
If the vehicle will be off the road before it goes, yes. An untaxed vehicle without a SORN can trigger an automatic fine. GOV.UK says you must make a SORN if you want to break a vehicle down for parts before you scrap it.
Breaking a car for parts
GOV.UK allows you to take parts off your own vehicle before scrapping it, to repair another vehicle you own:
- Make a SORN first and keep the vehicle off the road.
- Remove parts without polluting: no oil or fluids into the ground or drains.
- Take the shell to an ATF with the V5C. The ATF can charge a fee if essential parts (engine, gearbox, bodywork or wheels) have been removed.
- Tell DVLA and keep the certificate of destruction.
If you bought a vehicle only to strip parts to sell or restore another vehicle, GOV.UK says the parts must be removed at an ATF.
Refunds
If the vehicle still had tax when you scrapped it, DVLA refunds any full months automatically. If it was already SORN, there's no tax to refund.
Write-offs
If an insurer wrote the car off, the process is different. See insurance write-offs and SORN.
Before you scrap: is it worth saving?
Check the MOT history. A car that only failed on a few items might be worth more repaired or sold as a project. A full MOT history check shows exactly what failed and when.
