How to SORN by post (form V890)
The postal route is slower, but it's the one you need when the vehicle isn't in your name, your log book is missing or your address is out of date.
When you need to SORN by post
GOV.UK says you should use form V890 by post when:
- the vehicle isn't registered in your name: fill in the appropriate part of the log book and send it with a V890
- your address on the V5C is wrong and you're updating it by post: write the new address in section 3 (new-style log book with coloured numbered blocks) or section 6 (older style), and send the log book with a V890
- you don't have a log book: send an application for a log book (form V62) with the V890. A new log book costs £25
- you simply prefer to apply on paper

Step 1: Get form V890
Form V890, "Application for a statutory off road notification", can be downloaded from GOV.UK. Search "V890" on gov.uk or follow the link from the Make a SORN page. DVLA doesn't charge for the form.
Step 2: Fill it in
- Write clearly in black ink and capital letters.
- Give the registration number, make and model exactly as on the log book.
- Fill in your name and address as the keeper.
- Sign and date the declaration that the vehicle will be kept off the road.
Step 3: Send it with the right documents
| Situation | Send |
|---|---|
| Vehicle not in your name | V890 + the completed new keeper part of the log book |
| Address wrong on V5C | V890 + log book with new address in section 3 or 6 |
| No log book | V890 + V62 + £25 fee |
| Everything correct, just prefer post | V890 |
Post it to: DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AR. Use the right postage, and consider a proof-of-postage service so you can show when you sent it.
Can I post it in advance?
Yes, within limits. GOV.UK says you can apply by post to take a vehicle off the road this month, next month or the month after. If it's not this month, include a letter explaining why you can't send the form nearer the time.
How long does a postal SORN take?
DVLA lists 6 to 8 weeks for postal applications. Because a SORN can't be backdated, don't leave it until the last minute. If your tax runs out while the form is in the post, the vehicle could be flagged as untaxed. Keep your proof of postage in case you need to challenge a fine letter.
If you apply in the month your tax expires, the SORN starts on the 1st of next month; otherwise it starts immediately. It ends when you tax, sell, scrap or export the vehicle.

- Stays on until you tax, sell, scrap or export it
After DVLA processes it
- The vehicle shows as SORN on DVLA's vehicle enquiry service.
- If you sent a V62, a new V5C log book arrives in your name.
- Any refund for full months of tax is sent to the name and address on the log book.
Tips to avoid delays
- Don't send cash. Pay the V62 fee by cheque or postal order made payable to "DVLA, Swansea" if needed.
- Double-check the registration. One wrong character sends your SORN to someone else's vehicle record.
- Keep copies or photos of everything you send.
- If nothing has changed after 8 weeks, call DVLA Vehicle Enquiries on 0300 790 6802 (contact numbers).
