DVLA Vehicle Enquiries (to speak to someone)0300 790 6802

Before you call

Have these in front of you:

As with the online service, the vehicle needs to be registered in your name. If it isn't, use SORN by post.

What happens on the call

  1. Call 0300 123 4321 and choose the option for taking a vehicle off the road.
  2. Key in or say your reference number when asked.
  3. Confirm the registration and vehicle details read back to you.
  4. Confirm you want to declare the vehicle off the road.
  5. Write down any confirmation you're given, plus the date and time.

How long until it shows?

SORNs made by phone are recorded on DVLA's system, but DVLA's contact page says to allow up to 4 weeks for SORN confirmation by telephone before you chase it. You can check the SORN status online in the meantime. If it still isn't showing after that, see SORN not showing.

Refunds when you SORN by phone

DVLA cancels your tax and sends a refund for each full month left to the name and address on your log book. DVLA's published processing time for a refund after a phone or online SORN is around 6 weeks. If nothing has arrived after 8 weeks, see refund not received.

When to use the phone line

If you need to speak to an adviser about a problem, for example the wrong keeper on the record or a letter you've received, call DVLA Vehicle Enquiries on 0300 790 6802 instead, or use DVLA's webchat or WhatsApp service linked from Contact DVLA.
