How to SORN without a V5C log book

No log book? You can still take the vehicle off the road. Which route you use depends on whether you have a recent tax reminder.

Checked against GOV.UK guidance · Updated 25 October 2026

Option 1: Use your tax reminder (fastest)

If you've had a recent vehicle tax reminder from DVLA (a V11 letter, email or text), it carries a 16-digit reference number. You can use it to SORN online or by phone without your V5C, as long as the vehicle is registered in your name. Reminders usually arrive shortly before tax is due, so check your inbox, texts and post. Look for messages from DVLA about "vehicle tax due".

Option 2: Apply for a new log book and SORN together

If you have no log book and no reminder, GOV.UK says to fill in and send:

  1. Form V62, application for a vehicle registration certificate (log book)
  2. Form V890, the SORN application
  3. The £25 fee for a new log book, by cheque or postal order to "DVLA, Swansea"

Send both forms together to DVLA. The SORN is processed along with your new log book. Source: GOV.UK Make a SORN and Get a vehicle log book.

Option 3: Replace the log book online first

If the vehicle is already in your name and the log book is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed, you may be able to get a replacement V5C online for £25. GOV.UK says it usually arrives within 5 to 7 working days, and to contact DVLA if it hasn't arrived after 2 weeks. When it arrives, SORN online with the new 11-digit reference.

Bought a car without a log book?

If you bought a vehicle and didn't get the V5C or the green new keeper slip, you need form V62 to register it in your name (GOV.UK). Be careful. A missing log book can be a warning sign. Check the vehicle's history first and see bought a car with SORN.
