10 SORN myths that cost drivers money

Most SORN fines come from half-remembered rules. Here are the ten myths we hear most, and the facts from GOV.UK.

Checked against GOV.UK guidance · Updated 25 October 2026

1. "You have to renew SORN every year"

False. Annual renewal ended in 2013. A SORN now lasts until the vehicle is taxed, sold, scrapped or exported.

2. "If it hasn't moved, I don't need tax or SORN"

False. Every registered vehicle must be taxed or declared SORN. An untaxed vehicle without a SORN triggers an automatic £80 penalty, whether it moved or not.

3. "I can park a SORN car outside my house"

False. A SORN vehicle must be off the public road: garage, private drive or private land. See SORN car on the road.

4. "You have to pay to SORN"

False. SORN is free with DVLA online, by phone or by post. Paid "SORN services" charge you for something you can do yourself in five minutes (how to SORN).

5. "A SORN car must still be insured"

False. A SORN vehicle is excluded from continuous insurance enforcement. Laid-up cover is optional but often sensible (insurance).

6. "The SORN comes with the car when I buy it"

False. A SORN can't be transferred. Tax it or make your own SORN (buying a SORN car).

7. "I can SORN it from the date it stopped being used"

False. You can't backdate a SORN (when SORN starts).

8. "I can't drive a SORN car anywhere"

Mostly true, with one exception. You can drive to and from a pre-booked MOT or test, insured (MOT and SORN).

9. "I need a valid MOT to SORN"

False. No MOT is needed to declare SORN. You need one to tax it again.

10. "Classic cars don't need tax or SORN"

False. Historic vehicles may not *pay* tax (built before 1 January 1986, from 1 April 2026) but must still be taxed at £0 or declared SORN (classic cars).
